Happy Birthday Ezra!

As always, this post has taken me far too long to write, edit, add pictures and post. You will have to bear with me. I’m not the “put together, get it all done, organized, stay at home mom” that I was hoping I’d be right now.
On October 6th my son turned a year old. We threw a party, Halloween and Pumpkin themed, of course. I made Ezra’s birthday cake, as my mother had done for me and my brother. It tasted delicious (spice cake with caramel and cream cheese frosting). It was however, uglier than sin. So I’m not the best at frosting cakes… it tasted great. The kids had a great time and enjoyed their Halloween masks and head bands (thank you Wal*Mart) and their healthy, yet still appealing, goodie bags.

The night before Ezra’s birthday, after he had gone to bed, we were getting some things ready for the next day and I couldn't help but think how quickly the past year had gone. Only twelve short months ago we brought this tiny person home from the hospital and he was helpless. I remember having the realization that if we don’t feed him, he doesn't eat. I realize that this concept makes total sense and I’m aware that I probably knew this before he was born, but the first time he cried and there was no nurse to help me figure out what was wrong, that really scared me. How on earth could I take care of this little human? Who did I think I was? Why did I think I could handle this?
After a few weeks, I got the hang of it. Chris had gone back to work. I was going to be off till January, just me and the baby. After about 6 weeks I was ready to go back to work. I am one who thrives on social interactions and you only can expect so much from a 6 week old. I was not enjoying this maternity leave. While I was home alone (essentially), I found ways to pass the time. I put up Christmas decorations (before Thanksgiving). I cooked… a lot. The house was always clean (which Chris really appreciated). I even had time to think about how I would revamp the Family Medical Leave (the PC term for Maternity Leave) to include 2 months at the very beginning of the baby’s life and then you had the option to take 4 weeks of leave any time during the baby’s first 2 years. You would still get the standard 3 months off but you could split it up so you wouldn't spend three months watching a kid eat, sleep, poop, and cry. As soon as Ezra started smiling at me all the time, laughing and exploring things (when you actually get some satisfaction and repayment for the sleepless nights and copious amounts of laundry) it’s time to go back to work. That is simply NOT FAIR!! Not to mention my husband’s company gave him two weeks off when the baby was first born then he could take 2 more weeks anytime he wanted before Ezra turned a year old, in order to “bond with him”. (I apologize for the incoherent thoughts, I've been emotional)
After the holidays it was time for me to head back to work. The night before I headed back I was a wreck. I was excited to get back to my old life; a life that I understood, a life I could manage, where I knew how to do my job and a life where I didn't have to ask so many questions. Boy was I wrong. Despite the fact that I was only gone 3 months it seemed everything had changed. So there I was, confused and unaware of how to handle my new life at home and confused and left behind at work. Needless to say, maternity leave was looking better every day. I was only back to work about 8 weeks before I knew that my true calling was to stay home with my baby boy.  It took some major planning and sacrificing but I've been home for almost 2 months and it is by far one of the best decisions I've made in my life.
It’s so hard to believe everything we've accomplished in a year’s time. Ezra went from a helpless beautiful baby boy to an adventurous, adorable little ball of fire (that took his first steps the day before his birthday). This year has definitely been a defining year in the life of the Tyo Family. We can’t wait to see what the next year has to offer.

Setting the Routine

*I would like to preface this blog post with a fact. This post has taken me 4 weeks to write (because let’s face it, it took me that long to get used to being home with a very busy little boy).

Things have really come together the past  two  four  six weeks. The house is staying clean, dinner is ready when Chris gets home and Baby Boy is having a great time at home with Mama (although his recent attachment issues will soon need to be addressed). We have established a routine that is simple and pretty easy to maintain.

Things we have done in the past 6 weeks:

-Gone to the Zoo (at least once a week so far). We will take you too!

-Multiple walks around the neighborhood and to the park

-Celebrated our third wedding anniversary with a night in  downtown Cincy. We ate at Rock Bottom Brewery, stayed at the Millennium Hotel and celebrated our city’s German heritage at Oktoberfest.

-Planned a trip with my parents to Tennessee in November.

-Planning the most wonderful 1st Birthday party a little boy could ever have.

Where has the time gone? I feel like just a few weeks ago we brought Ezra home from the hospital and now in less than a week he will turn a year old. He is so close to walking and has three teeth. We will have our 1 year checkup in about 2 weeks and I can’t wait to see how much he’s grown. He is definitely heavier and taller than he was at his 9 month appointment but really I can’t even begin to guess how much bigger he is now.  He has developed quite the personality and likes to do things that make people laugh.

*My husband suggested that all the funny texts/stories  I send him during the day would be nice addition to my posts. So. Here. You. Go.

“I just watched our son dump his breakfast on the floor. I didn’t say anything then he noticed that I saw him and he moved his hand really fast like ‘I didn’t just do that’ and gave me the Tyo grin with the Blanton eyes and I realized that we are in a whole lot of trouble.”

“Every time I pick up the phone and bring it to my face the baby crawls up and yells ‘Dada’ into the phone.”

“I closed the bathroom door to keep the baby out but I had left the light on. Ezra crawled up to the door, stood himself up, pounded on the door and yelled ‘dadadada’.”

Ezra may have become very attached to his Mama in the past six weeks, but he loves his Daddy and whenever there is a chance he can see Daddy or hear Daddy’s voice, he takes advantage of it.

My little boy is beginning to develop quite the personality. I can't wait to see the kid he becomes.

My Mini Vacation

I have officially been off work for over a week. It’s still very strange getting up and not getting ready to leave the house right away. In fact, I still am up at 6:00 when Chris gets up. I get dressed and have my coffee before the baby even gets up. I am hoping that this trend continues. Ezra is still in daycare right now (we paid till the end of the month). I used my time alone to organize the house, get some things done that would be much easier without a nosy toddler involved.

This morning (okay, okay, it’s almost 11:00), I write from Starbucks in Blue Ash. I have had some emails to send, church things to type up, and honestly I have been so distracted at home that none of them have gotten done. As of right now, I’ve been sitting in this coffee shop for about 90 minutes and have gotten far more accomplished than had I been sitting on the couch at home. On top of all the above things that were mentioned I have also completed a list of things for Ezra and I to do in the next few weeks to keep our days from becoming mundane.

Autumn Activities for a Busy Toddler and Mama:
We will happily accept any other ideas that people have.

Go to the Zoo (we bought a Cincinnati Zoo pass and get free guests. If you have a free morning/afternoon let us know. We would love to take you to the Zoo.)
Renaissance Festival (no judgement please, I have never been and I love that kind of stuff)
Pumpkin Painting
Apple Orchard (still looking for a good one, the one that I used to go to closed)
Play in the Leaves
Visit the newJungle Jims

Labor Day Weekend

House is clean. Laundry is caught up. We have no scheduled plans. The Ultimate Trifecta (as my husband says).  So far, we have only left the house to do what we want.  It’s wonderful. A perfect way to begin this new chapter in our life; caught up, organized, and unobligated.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Labor Day weekend.

My Tuesday Friends

Okay... so quite a bit has happened since I last wrote a post.

Things that I accomplished (on the list):
Annihilated the Laundry Monster.
Made awesome apple butter.
Made unimpressive but still delicious cherry pie.
Bought new jammies for Baby Boy
Finished all Hospital work by my last day (which was yesterday).

Things I accomplished (not on the list):
Organized pantry and kitchen cabinets (it sounds way less impressive than it is).
Purchased a Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden membership (will be going tomorrow with Baby Boy and my mama).

My Last Day of Work
My last day at work was very bitter sweet. I said goodbye to a couple of the families that I worked with this summer. My boss took me out to lunch to a wonderful little German Restaurant  in Cincinnati. It was so nice to talk to her about non-work things and the more we talked about motherhood and having to split time between home and work the more I was happy about my decision to stay home.

The Tuesday Crew
Going out to eat on Tuesday nights has become a ritual for our small group of friends. It started back before Chris and I got married. Some Hanover College friends and I started attending Pub Trivia at a local Irish Pub. With only three or four people from Hanover our team name was "We have our B.A.'s and we don't know B.S.". Once my husband joined the team we had to change the name (since he did have his B.S.). After that, the team grew to include other friends that we knew from high school, friends from work, and anyone who we thought would bring up the team's collective I.Q. We went to trivia for about 2 years, every Tuesday. Then our two favorite servers told us they were leaving. With no desire to get to know new servers, “Try New Things Tuesday” was born. We pick a new place or new activity every Tuesday and if you can make it, great. If you can’t attend, then you have no vote where we go next week.
These people that I affectionately call my Tuesday Crew have grown to be a very important part of our life. We celebrate new jobs, graduations, birthdays, new apartments, new boyfriends/girlfriends and anything else that is worth celebrating. We also are there for each other when a beer with friends will be the only silver lining to one hell of a day. I feel so lucky to call these wonderful people my friends.

One Week to Go

I have just a little over a week left before I make the switch from a working mom to a stay at home mom. I have to admit it’s all a little bitter sweet.

I suppose I should tell you what I do for a living. I work for a pediatric hospital in a department that treats patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder. I work with the little peanuts (ages 3-6 years) and help facilitate a preschool program that focuses a lot on language development and social, cognitive, and play skills. After working with some of these families for 2 years it’s kind of sad to have to say goodbye (however, I’m sure I’ll get over it quickly).

As I count down my days, I’m trying to get the house ready for regular daytime inhabitants. I’ve found it’s much easier to keep a clean house clean, as opposed to clean a dirty house, when you are also trying to entertain, feed, keep safe, a ten month old.
This weekend was no exception. After we went to Choo Choo's Restaurant for breakfast.

Ezra loves sitting outside at Choo Choo's.

He loves his daddy too.

I ventured to Kroger to get some grocery shopping done. Then it was cleaning time. With much help from Pinterest I discovered a tip that assisted me in this deep cleaning process. I wish to share it with you.

Cleaning a Microsuede Couch:
When my husband and I were buying furniture to put in our new house we had this crazy idea that a beige microsuede couch and recliner was something that we had to have. We were horribly wrong. It shows every little water mark, drip and spot. Our couch was a mess. We were on the verge of throwing it out until I found this post on Pinterest. With as simple as it sounded (spray bottle + rubbing alcohol + light colored sponge + soft brush) I thought I’d give it a go. It worked!! It looks almost as good as new. If you have microsuede furniture please check it out. If you are smart and did not purchase beige hard to clean furniture I applaud you. The only thing I did a little differently was that I sprayed the alcohol on the sponge as opposed to directly to the cushion. I thought I had a little more control over where the alcohol went that way. You definitely have to let it dry all the way. I was able to clean the stove burners, load and unload the dishwasher, wash bottles all while the cushions were drying. Which brings me too…

My Reward for Staying on Task:
With Fall rapidly approaching (okay so it's creeping along taking its sweet time) I have been searching for fun Fall recipes. I have found a few that will be making an appearance in the next few weeks: Apple Butter, Crock Pot Apple Sauce, Pumpkin Butter and Saturday’s recipe: Ginger Apple Ale

Ginger Apple Ale:
Ingredients:
Ginger Ale
Apple Cider
Bourbon

Directions:
Mix 2 parts ginger ale
       2 parts cider
1 part bourbon (or as little or as much as you like)
Pour over ice

My husband and I both preferred less than 1 part bourbon. It was 3 in the afternoon after all.

My plans for the upcoming week: (because it won’t get done if I don’t say/type it out loud)

At Work:
Write up end of summer reports
Train replacement
Clean out desk
Prepare for 2 parent conferences

At Home:
Bake a Pie for Father –in– law’s birthday
Making Apple Butter
Wage war against the Laundry Monster
Clean up craft table down stairs
Put Baby Boy’s “too small for him” clothes into storage
Purchase new Fall weather jammies for Ezra
Write Letter back to dear friends in Baltimore

Until next time…

it starts...

So… here I am, about to embark on an adventure unlike any other I have ever faced.
As of August 21, 2012, I will be the newest Stay-At-Home-Mom on the block!

::cheers of applause::gasps of shock::

With the support of my wonderful husband and love for my beautiful son, I have decided that raising my family and being an active part of our life is far more important than any job I could have outside the home. It has taken a lot of thought, consideration, smiles, tears, and prayers to come to this conclusion. If you think I’m outside my mind (as true as that may be) please keep it to yourself. There is no going back now, and I’m facing this life change with arms open and a big smile on my face.

A little about me…

Chris and I on our honeymoon, in New England (this is one of my favorite pictures).

Name: Sarah T
Location: Cincinnati, OH
School/Degree: Hanover College (Hanover, IN) Psychology
Loves: my family, my church, my friends, my music, theatre, baseball (particularly the Cincinnati Reds), manicures, Charlie Brown, shopping, baking, singing, talking, wine, and honey whiskey
Dislikes: putting away laundry, gardening, monkeys, toffee, chaos, bad/weird music, chipped nail polish, slasher movies, and hiking

My Peeps:
I mentioned my wonderful husband, Christopher. We met in high school (didn’t date till college). We have been married almost 3 years.  He is very tech savvy and a self-proclaimed beverage snob (beer, wine, liquor, coffee, you name it). He loves the outdoors, camping, Frisbee golf, and all things electronic (even his toothbrush has batteries).

Isn't he the cutest thing you've ever seen??? (Photo curtesy of Perfect Image Photography)

My beautiful baby boy, Ezra, will be one year old in October. He loves to make noise, attempt to sneak into the bathroom, eat puffs, climb Mt. Daddy, squeal, and occasionally watch Veggie Tales. He’s an awesome sleeper, okay, eater, and the best little boy in my life.

Top 5 reasons I'm writing this blog:
1.       I need an outlet. If I can’t tell my office mates about the funny things my son did, the cool Pinterest craft I made, the delicious wine Chris bought, and all my other funnies that happen in and out of my house then I need to tell you.
2.       Chris and I have quite a few, very loved, friends and family members who don’t live near us and have missed out on the first 10 months of Ezra’s life. We want them to be a part of our life and our family a part of theirs.
3.       I’ll need something to drive me and keep me accountable so I don’t waste all my time pinning ideas about organization, craft projects, and recipes and actually do them.
4.       A record of my time home with my son. I plan on going back to work eventually and when I do enter the work force again I want to look back fondly on my time at home and remember the details that will make me smile.
5.       I enjoy telling stories (as my family and friends like to remind me, sometimes I tell them two or three times).

Well that's it... my first blog post. ::check::
Wish me luck, I'm going to need it.
